You know I’ve got you covered when it comes to super simple, get-you-out-the-door-quick styles to jazz things up with your natural hair! The high bun or topknot is a hair style that works for any occasion, any season and any texture. And, hey, if you don’t have the length, all you gotta do is make a run to your local beauty supply store and grab a pack of hair… that’s what I did!

I actually keep a pack of hair handy for when I feel like doing some kind of updo like a high bun where I need more volume or length. For the last few years, my faux hair of choice has been Cuban Twist Hair. You may have heard tons about Marley hair as the go-to for natural hair styles and yes, I’ve got a few packs of that in my stash as well. But since finding Cuban Twist Hair, I can’t seem to use anything else! Since it’s not as shiny or has as defined a texture as most Marley hair you’ll find, I think it’s much more natural-looking and works better for those of us with kinkier textures.

Oh, I should let you know that I did start off with blown-out hair. These styles work best if your natural hair is stretched in some way but you don’t have to use heat if you don’t want to. Cute, no?! So, here’s a quick tip for those edges:

The best part of the high bun is the sleekness and overall neatness of it. So if you really want your edges to LAY lay, tie your head down with a large scarf and let it set overnight… that’s what I did here. 😉 For the most part, my Eco Styler Gel will keep the hair where I put it (and my natural hair is SUPER kinky aka “4C” if you do the hair typing thing) and I may tie it down for 15-20 minutes or so while I get dressed, etc., for extra security. But for OPTIMAL lay-age, overnight is where it’s at!
