Natural Hair on the Red Carpet| Lupita + Viola 2015 SAG Awards

“Once again, it’s on!”

Last night’s 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards brought out the naturalistas in a big way!

Red carpet slayer Lupita Nyong’o and stylist Micaela Erlanger have hit another one outta the park with this GORG-em-OUS Elie Saab gown. Her braided updo more than compliments this bold print and that skin is as radiant as ever!SAG-Awards-2015-Lupita-1SAG-Awards-2015-Lupita-5 SAG-Awards-2015-Lupita-4Within no time, fashion illustrator Josefina Fernandez posted this epicness to Instagram

SAG-Awards-2015-Lupita-Josefina-FernandezViola Davis rocked a fro to top off her white halter Max Mara gown and the natural hair enthusiasts were loving it… me included, of course! Might this be a twist-out… braid-out? *shrugs* I pity the fool who STILL says naturally kinky hair can’t be classy!

In an awesome acceptance speech, Viola thanked her husband, daughter and mother, “the people who love me exactly how God made me”. We see you Viola!

still smile at Lupita’s photos. She glows, inside and out. I loved that Viola’s makeup was natural and not overdone. It may take a while for the rest of Hollywood’s black stars to embrace their natural texture (if they so desire–no Natural Nazi here) but it’s nice to see these women paving the way. I’ll never forget seeing a gorgeous photo of Diana Ross when I was a child. She had a huge afro and I told my mom I wanted my hair like that when I grew up. She glanced and dismissively said, “That’s a wig.” Major letdown and impacted my view of black beauty for decades. It’s very refreshing that today’s young ladies can see someone who looks like them with hairstyles they can actually attain. I love it!
