I, for one, am a lil more than tired of hearing women with kinky textured hair complain about all the things their hair can’t do all while panting over the looser curls of another natural. It’s sad, really. Meanwhile, one of my workmates, who has much looser curls than I have, always compliments my hair. One day she exclaimed,” I LOVE all the things your hair can do!” So, why is it that we often want what we don’t or can’t have? Is there any way to change the perception of naturally textured hair for these little beauties? #LoveYourCurls, the latest initiative by Dove, aims to do just that. The bottom line: Love your curls and they will too! When this video came up in my Facebook feed the other day, I watched immediately and knew I just HAD to share! It may be the preggo hormones (LOL!) but it had me tearing up. Simple beautiful! Watch and see if you don’t feel the same… What stood out to me is that a full range of curls are represented from loose waves to tightly-coiled kinks. It’s so important that we show young girls by way of example that we love ourselves just the way we are, including our hair!…

Another good one… Comparison is the thief of joy. Truisms for life in general, yes? I can’t help but think, though, how apropos this statement is with respect to a person’s individual natural hair journey. A “code of conduct”, if you will, for the natural hair community. You cannot truly enjoy your own beautiful natural hair if you’re steadily comparing yourself to others. Now, in no way am I saying that admiring someone else’s hair means that you don’t love your own. But it’s one thing to look at someone in admiration and another to constantly wonder why someone’s hair is so awesome and yours isn’t. Follow what I’m saying? The more you compare, the more you stress and beat yourself up about the plight of your hair which may not even be a plight in the first place. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that #embraceyourkinks and #embracethefrizz are among my favorite hashtags when posting fabulous fros. Some of us tend to get so wrapped up in having the “perfect curl” or achieving a “perfectly defined” twist-out, braid-out or bantu knot-out that we can lose sight of what this natural hair “thing” is all about in the first place- loving your hair just the way it is. Before you come for me LOL… I’m not saying you don’t love your hair if you wear a twist-out nor am I saying anything is wrong with rocking these styles at all! Braid-outs are my thing, definitely one of my go-to styles. And when it’s all fresh and the waves are poppin, you can’t tell me NOTHING!
