Hair Tip Tuesday: Keep It Simple!

In this week’s edition, I thought I’d pick up from where we left off last week. Shall we? This natural hair stuff doesn’t have to be as difficult or as confusing as some might make it out to be. One way to keep from pulling out your hair in frustration is to keep a simple and consistent regimen, starting with a handful of products. In my experience, there are just a few basic things you really need to get you started on a decent regimen. Cleanser Whether you use a commercial shampoo or a natural alternative, the choice is yours. Bottom line- clean hair will lead to healthy hair. If you do go the route of commercial shampoos, it’s great to have both a moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo as well as a good clarifying shampoo to thoroughly cleanse all the random gook (gels, creams, butters) that you may have piled on throughout…

Hair Tip Tuesday: Everything Ain’t for Everybody!

…in my effort to get the point across, you will excuse the poor grammar in the title. LOL! I really could just stop at the title, but I feel the need to expound just a bit. So, here’s the thing girls. Everyone’s hair is different. I’m not just speaking in terms of mere appearance. The fact that there are different types of hair- straight, curly, coily, etc- is obvious. To help you grasp what I mean, I’ll insert an analogy from hair care pro Simeko Watkins-Hartley that explains it clearly. “Your hair is like your fingerprint. No two are exactly the same.” YES! The sheer makeup of hair differs from person to person. You may be at the point in your journey where you realize that even the strands of hair on your own head aren’t the same all over! That being the case, you cannot jump on every product…

Hair Tip Tuesday: The Importance of a Consistent Hair Regimen

We can spend a load on the latest thing to get THE perfect hair but guess what? All those products, pills and hair potions can mean nothing if you lack consistency! Yep. Finding the right products for your hair is only half the battle. Once you’ve got that together, it’s a good idea to figure out a regular schedule of washing, conditioning and moisturizing that works best for you, otherwise known as a regimen. YOU. Not your BFF or your favorite YouTuber. You! There’s no one strict rule for every natural as to the frequency of their regimen. How could there be?! Everyone’s hair is different and will need a different routine of care depending, not only on the makeup of the hair itself but also on the person’s lifestyle… probably even more so. For example… A person who works out daily may wash or cowash their hair just as of…

Products Do NOT Create Curl Patterns

You may often read comments under an Instagram pic of someone with curls-a-poppin where someone asks something like, “what can I use to make my hair curl like that?” or… “I use that product and my curls never come out like that!”  Or maybe YOU were the person making these very comments. Well, the the fact is, your curl patterns and textures may just be different. The point is… Curl defining products will only define the type of curl you already have. They will not create a new one! Outside of something containing chemicals, there is no product you can put on your hair that will turn it from tight kinky coils to flowy, bouncy, loose curls in one easy application. BUT… If you DO want achieve that type of look, you aren’t without options! You can easily set your hair using various methods — twisting, braiding, bantu knots — to temporarily alter…

Hair Tip Tuesday: Don’t Weave It & Forget It!

I understand… sometimes our hair needs a break or we may want to make life a bit easier by installing a weave. Thing is, while they can be cute, some of us forget that we actually have hair under there! O_O Some women (and I know this for a fact!) feel that once they slap that puppy on, they can just get up and go for months on end without giving any attention to the hair growing out of their scalp. No bueno, kids! You MUST take care of your OWN hair, even especially when you were weaves and wigs. That closed-in environment can become a hotbed for bacteria and fungus! Leaving your hair to its own devices can lead to buildup of excessive dandruff and more serious issues like hair loss and infections. PLEASE, regularly cleanse, condition and moisturize your hair and scalp. But some may wonder… How Is That…
