In this week’s edition, I thought I’d pick up from where we left off last week. Shall we? This natural hair stuff doesn’t have to be as difficult or as confusing as some might make it out to be. One way to keep from pulling out your hair in frustration is to keep a simple and consistent regimen, starting with a handful of products. In my experience, there are just a few basic things you really need to get you started on a decent regimen. Cleanser Whether you use a commercial shampoo or a natural alternative, the choice is yours. Bottom line- clean hair will lead to healthy hair. If you do go the route of commercial shampoos, it’s great to have both a moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo as well as a good clarifying shampoo to thoroughly cleanse all the random gook (gels, creams, butters) that you may have piled on throughout the week… aka product buildup. Apple cider vinegar and baking soda are also great for clarifying. Conditioner This is used to improve the condition of the hair and can come in the form of a moisturizer (to put back what you might have lost in the cleansing stage) a protein treatment or a combo of both as in the case with some deep conditioners. Generally, kinky or afro-textured hair craves moisture more than it does protein. So, protein treatments, while helpful, may not need to be used as frequently as a moisturizing conditioner. I’ll have more on all of this in a future post. Leave-In Leave-in conditioners pretty much continue the moisturizing process after washing and may even include a form of light protein to give the hair a good moisture-protein balance. I never skip this step! Oil/Butter Here’s where it all comes together. While the hair is still slightly…
…in my effort to get the point across, you will excuse the poor grammar in the title. LOL! I really could just stop at the title, but I feel the need to expound just a bit. So, here’s the thing girls. Everyone’s hair is different. I’m not just speaking in terms of mere appearance. The fact that there are different types of hair- straight, curly, coily, etc- is obvious. To help you grasp what I mean, I’ll insert an analogy from hair care pro Simeko Watkins-Hartley that explains it clearly. “Your hair is like your fingerprint. No two are exactly the same.” YES! The sheer makeup of hair differs from person to person. You may be at the point in your journey where you realize that even the strands of hair on your own head aren’t the same all over! That being the case, you cannot jump on every product someone else’s hair responds well to with the expectation that you will have the same exact results. If your hair happens to turn out amazing, awesome! But don’t be upset if it doesn’t. As bloggers and vloggers, we mean well when we do product reviews. But what I appreciate about some, if not most, of the reviews I read/watch is that a disclaimer is given, either in the video itself or in the description or blog post, stating that results may vary. The reviewer is simply offering their personal opinion and you should definitely keep that in mind. “But Vlogger X is my hair twin!” Is there REALLY such a thing as a hair twin, a person whose hair is exactly like yours in every way? Please see above quote. (tee-hee!) I hate to break it to you but no matter how much your hair may look like another person’s,…

This past Fashion Week in New York City, I was excited to join the Optimum Amla Legend style squad for a behind-the-scenes view at the looks they executed for the Edwing D’Angelo Fall/Winter 2014 show! As a proud sponsor of the show, Optimum was responsible for complementing D’Angelo’s designs with simple yet slightly edgy hair. SoftSheen-Carson Director of Education Mezei Jefferson explains the looks and their inspiration: “We’re giving an anarchy look to it, like French Revolution… so we’re giving them the part down the center, sweeping all the hair over to the side, long ponytail then we’re wrapping it with the gold cord to give it that kind of bold feel. For the guys, we’re giving them side parts, sweeping it over with a little height in the front, you know, hair that’s reminiscent of that time period.” The team made use of Optimum Amla Legend products to achieve these sleek styles including their Treasured Temple Edge Tamer and Enchanted Finish Hold & Polish Spray . Joining the glam squad for the event was Vera Moore Cosmetics. The team dolled up the female models with smokey eyes and winged liner to complement the hair. And the guys, yup, they get makeup too… When the models hit the floor in D’Angelo’s amazingly classy designs, you saw how it all came together. Many thanks to the team at Optimum Amla Legend and Edwing D’Angelo for being super sweet and allowing me to come behind the scenes and attend my first ever REAL fashion show! I’m soooo looking forward to NYFW S/S 2015 in September! Are you? xoxo Toia B.

It’s great to meet others who are as passionate about natural hair care as I am! After following Brooklyn-based beauty brand Amazing Botanicals on social media for some time, I finally had the pleasure of meeting entrepreneurs Asha Burton and Shelly Morant at a networking event last September. Within a few moments, I was confident that these ladies were about their business and knew their stuff! Meet these two amazing women who are doing their part to contribute to the natural hair community… When and why did you decide to return to your natural hair texture and what have you learned along the way that you can share with those who may be new or struggling on this journey? Asha: The only real reason why I returned to my natural texture was because I was tired of forcing by hair to do something it didn’t naturally. I had way too many days of trying to catch my breaking hair into a ponytail that was comprised of possibly 5 strands of hair. There was a time when I had healthy processed hair, however once I left high school, I felt the need to re-learned my hair all over again. I started that journey in 2003 and have never felt the need to go back. Shelly: I returned to natural in 1996. After years of processing my scalp couldn’t take it anymore. Tired of getting perms and having sensitive scalp were the catalyst, then I discovered I had Psorasis! The perm was NOT going to agree anymore. I went natural when it was not popular but, it was healthy and necessary. I found one stylist that helped me in the beginning, she helped me believe in the advice a good stylist. These tips last a lifetime. 1) Don’t pay attention to other peoples hair! Everyone’s hair health and body is different. 2)…
Recently, I decided it was time I go through my stash of goodie bag samples and actually try out some stuff. I believe I received this duo by Elucence at the Halo Beauty Lounge event I attended over the summer. The brand was completely new to me so I was eager to give it a try and share my thoughts with you! Moisture Benefits Shampoo | $6, 10 oz. Key Ingredients: Peach extract, Irish moss, anise seed, ginseng, gingko hydrate wheat protein, polysaccharides |Glycerin Free, Silicone Free “This gentle cleansing shampoo contains peach extract, irish moss, ginseng and wheat protein — all of which moisturize and condition hair without weighing it down. Moisture Benefits Shampoo soothes and replenishes, leaving your hair feeling healthy and refreshed.” My Experience The smell is amazing! I instantly get the hints of peach with one whiff. Kinda reminds me of moscato. So yummy! Clearly, a little goes a long way with this product. As you can see from the photo above, I only used about a third of the total contents so a 10 oz. bottle would last me a good while. For six bucks, that’s a pretty good deal! After working the shampoo through each section of hair and massaging my scalp, I like to leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing so it can do its “thing”. It lathered up pretty good but didn’t leave my hair overly stripped. My scalp felt refreshed and was dirt-free. I felt like the Moisture Benefits Shampoo gave me a nice balance between a clarifying shampoo and other moisturizing shampoos that I use regularly. Me likey! You May Wanna Know… While this shampoo does NOT contain the dreaded Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (the detergent or surfactant used in many shampoos which can strip the hair of its natural oils), it…
