4 Ways Lupita Nyong’o Slayed the 2016 Met Gala

The theme of this year’s Costume Institute Exhibition is “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology”. As usual, each celeb interpreted that theme in their own unique way at last night’s opening gala. Some just ignored it altogether (Hey, they’re grown! They can wear what they want, right?). But, once again, Lupita Nyong’o at the 2016 Met Gala completely stole the show.

…and I’m gonna tell you why!

She Always Does.

I mean… let’s be honest with ourselves!

Okay, okay. I think there was ONE time back in 2014 when I was kinda like, “uhhhh” and even then, I didn’t HATE that dress. It had a nice silhouette and I still gave her props for always taking fashion risks. But overall, she doesn’t fail on the red carpet thanks to her longtime stylist, Micaela Erlanger. She knows her client and keeps her looking flawless. She’s definitely earning that paycheck!

This custom-designed, jade sequined Calvin Klein gown with velvet straps is so elegant and hits her in all the right places. Just look at her. There’s something to be said for a woman who can wear a dress and not have the dress wear her.

Apparently, Nate Parker’s mind was blown too!

Green is Her Color

You may recall that Lupita donned a green accented, 20’s flapper-inspired Prada dress at her first Met Gala appearance. Rewind a few months to the 2014 BAFTA Awards where she wore a gorgeous Christian Dior silk number in emerald green accented with a simple gold belt. THEN, at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, she hit us with a lovely kelly green, pleated chiffon gown, complete with floral appliqués on the plunging neckline, courtesy of Gucci.

Green just works for her and she knows it. Did y’all peep her April InStyle Magazine cover?! Girl! That green against that skin is just…

That HAIR Tho!

One thing about Lupita… if the fashion doesn’t blow you away, her hair will surely have you talking!

Since she stepped into our lives, she hasn’t only been killing it with what she wears on her body but what’s happening on her head it almost always just as newsworthy. There are mixed reviews on the hair (whispers of Dr. Seuss, Whoville and Marge Simpson), but you’ve gotta understand what the Met Gala is all about.

It’s a benefit for the COSTUME Institute. I don’t think she’s wearing this to a wedding or some other formal event. The looks are meant to be pretty avant-garde to support the theme and I think this sky-high, gravity-defying super puff is beyond dope!

She Was On-Theme

I thought, between the shimmering sequins and the four-tiered puff, she was spot on! Everything about this screams “futuristic”, which hits the theme for me. How do you reflect “Fashion in an Age of Technology” while remaining tasteful and effortlessly classy ?! Like THIS.

I’m giving Lupita two thumbs all the way up.

Hands down, the best of the night.

Oh, yes… the dress that lit up! Beautiful and VERY theme-appropriate! Zac Posen really makes some gorgeous dresses.
