Hair Tip Tuesday: Protect That Hair at Night!

Now, you may be thinking, “Hey! This is baby stuff… basic hair care 101. Who doesn’t know this already?!” Welp, you’d be surprised how many don’t!

What’s Wrong With Cotton?

Many of us probably own cotton bedding which, obviously, include cotton pillowcases. There are two important reasons why you do NOT want to (a) sleep on that cotton case without anything on your head OR (b) use a cotton scarf to keep your style intact, thinking you’re in the clear.

(1) cotton absorbs moisture… which is why we wear so much of it in the summertime. With our kinky/coily/curly hair already prone to dryness, I’m sure you don’t want to lose whatever bit of moisture you’ve worked so hard to maintain.

(2) due to the nature of cotton, your hair can sometimes snag on the material thus causing breakage. Add the absorption of moisture to the mix and that’s a one-way ticket to single strand knots-ville and split end city. No bueno.

So What Can You Do?

You wanna make sure you’re maintaining a healthy head of hair while preserving your style so some form of satin head wrap would be the way to go. Your local BSS (Beauty Supply Store) will carry some decent choices of satin (silk or something of the sort) bedtime head wear like bonnets or scarves, in many cases, in a variety of colors and patterns to suit your taste. You can also find what you need at online stores like Sally Beauty or NaturallyCurly.com.

Don’t like to feel “restricted” while you’re asleep? Does that bonnet or scarf keep slipping off because you sleep like a mad person? Ha! Then you may wanna go for a satin pillowcase. Toss and turn all you like without the risk of damage… to your hair, at least.

That’s all for now, my ladies. I hope this bit of info was helpful!

‘Til next time.

xoxo
