Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent or you work outside of the home, staying on top of keeping your home neat and clean can be a challenge… if you let it. As much of a neat freak as I am, I too have moments where I just kinda throw caution to the wind. But you and I can get a handle on this thing by doing just a few simple things each day to keep our home tidy without killing ourselves on the weekends!
1. If it Can Be Done Quickly, Do it NOW!
This is simple enough, no? Basically, if something takes as little as a minute or two to get done, just take care of it immediately! I’m talkin’ a quick wipe down of the bathroom sink or small spills and water droplets along the kitchen counters and floors. Do a little spot cleaning of the microwave right after you remove that plate of leftovers before gettin’ your grub on. Just had a bowl of cereal? As my Bajan mother would say, just turn around and clean it the same time! You’re in the kitchen anyway, right?
Think how much easier your life would be if you did just this every day! Get those small jobs done right away and you’ll save yourself some work later on.
2. Make Your Bed
I don’t know about you, but if I have to go in my bedroom for anything throughout the day and I open up the door to a neatly made bed… girl! The PEACE and tranquility I feel when I walk in and see that! It really makes a huge difference! Especially if you’ve got a small bedroom like we do where the bed takes up a greater portion of the space, having the bed made essentially means that the whole room, for the most part anyway, at least looks clean.
Understandably, sometimes, you’ll have to adjust. Because my husband sleeps during part of the day due to his work schedule, I do what I call a “fake make up” of the bed in the mornings. When I get up, instead of perfectly snapping the bedding into place, only for it to be disrupted soon after, I’ll just casually but neatly, pull the sheets up, fold his side over and straighten the pillows. Takes three minutes tops! 😉
3. A Place For Everything and Everything In Its Place!

Have a specific place for all your stuff and make sure you put the stuff back in their place once you’re done with them! Even if you have to have a sort of “catchall” bin for miscellaneous items that may not necessarily go together, cool. Just make sure you know what’s in it. If you use a closed container, label it. You may wanna go through said container or bin every once in a while to see if you can make sense of it or remove items to be placed with their cousins elsewhere.
Micah’s socks and ties have an easily accessible bin all to themselves as well as his wipes and other diaper changing/bath essentials. A room looks so much neater when everything has a home.A place for everything and everything in its place! #hometips Click To Tweet
4. Clean As You Go
This is a rule my mom has ingrained in me since I was young when it came to cooking and keeping the kitchen tidy. I still follow it to this day! But this tip can be used as you go about any other activity throughout the day.
Make it a habit to pick up any pieces of lint or other randomness you happen to spot on the floor/carpet as you’re walking through your home. Also, before you go from one room to another, check to see if there are any items that need to go back to their homes, whether it’s to your destination or another room that’s on the way. When your toddler is done playing with those blocks, put ’em away before he moves on to the flash cards.
Lastly, and this can be tough after you’ve had a long day BUT, try to put away your clothes right as you take them off at the end of the day. Don’t let that cute chair in the corner turn into the drop-off for the week’s outfits!
5. Spruce Up Before Bed

There’s nothing more refreshing than waking up on a beautiful, sunny morning and walking into a clean living room! To make that possible, I make sure I do a quick spruce-up every night.
As you can imagine, thanks to my little guy, our living room can end up looking like a war zone by bedtime. So before we head to sleep, we (yes, WE) put all the toys, books and cars back where they belong and “reset” the throw pillows. The next morning, I can kick my feet up and enjoy a few moments of peace in a clean room before he wakes up.
